    SIMS Populating a column

    Good morning all.

I wonder if anyone can share a few pearls of wisedom?

I am trying to populate an aspect in SIMS which is currently empty using results from 2 different aspects.

I want it to use a result from one aspect if there is an entry, and one from another if the first aspect does not have an entry.

I have tried if then else (see attachment) and it only puts in the result from the first aspect and leaves the rest blank.
BG E ENTRY GCSE ENG are our early entry results
BG&PG MAX GCSE ENG LANG is the rest of the banked and predicted grades for the subject.

    Any advice would be appreciated!

Is there a possibility that both columns could be populated? If not, use the SUM formula (formula for viewing) then a formula for entry "Marks TO GRADE" formula; the SUM will be the value of the populated column, so marks to grade will convert to whichever grade is in the populated column.

If both columns could be populated, you'll need an extra couple of steps...

Hmmm OK I was wrong in my previous post, your formula should work. Only thing I can think of ATM is are you sure the gradesets associated to those aspects have point values?

Yeah they do have gradesets with a points value and they are both using the same gradeset.

I think I misunderstood the problem; just to be clear, is the problem that if the first column is blank, then no value is put in to your calculated column?

First column is banked grades taken in November (so the first lot of exams after he government announced that first attempt counts).
The second column is the highest of all banked and predicted grades (some pupils will re-take so are still receiving predicted grades).

I need a 3rd column which will show the banked November grade if there is one, and if not, show the result from the banked and predicted grades column if that makes sense?

Might be a backward way of doing it and I've not tested it fully, but perhaps you could try the following:

    • Have a Formula for Data Review column which will do a Tally on your Banked Grade column with all the grades in it (can be hidden)
    • Have a Formula for Data Entry/Review (depending on whether you want to save the result) as an If Then Else formula
    • The If Then Else should do an If the Data Review Column equals 1, then the Column Equals the Banked Grade, Else the Column equals the Banked/Predicted column

Hopefully it should give you want your after.

I'm no expert in this area but have been given the following advice - The ‘Compare Marks by Column Report’ would be perfect
for what you are trying to achieve.

@PhilNeal - I don't know who gave you that advice but were they drunk?

that's for comparing lesson marks, not aspects/results (unless I'm missing something, in which case feel free to make me eat my words!)
