Sending files to Capita via FTP (or not).

    Hi,

Does anyone else experience extreme difficulties with FTPing files up to the capita support site?

I keep getting transfer errors and then it starts all over again - it apparently does not support resume.

I've been trying for 5 days now to get our database and docstorage folders to them for analysis. This is not the first time this has happened - it's all the time. I suspect pure luck is involved when we do get stuff uploaded after the 2 millionth attempt. We've taken to posting the files to them on a CD in the past coz it's quicker! :x

The transfer gets part of the way through - sometimes 90% which makes it all the more frustrating. I've even tried it from home in case it's our connection here that's dropping it but the same thing happens.

    Using Filezilla btw.

    Hi Heebeejeebee,

According to Capita there are no issues with transferring data to them, however according to the rest of the country (or so it seems!) the ftp server will disconnect you every hour, on the hour (ie x o'clock). There is a thread on SupportNet under the Feedback forum which is now six pages long called 'Sending Data'. It's probably worth you readin the last page of that.

I agree with ittech - we just use a cd or dvd to send the files. Transferring large lumps of data to anyone can still be a pain in this day and age and the trusty cd is easiest. Plus you aren't sending confidential files unencrypted via FTP across the internet...

How did I miss that? I was chugging around the site for ages looking for clues. D'oh!

It seems splitting it may work so I'll give it a go and start just after the hour (I did notice the last disconnection was dead on the hour). If that doesn't work it's snail mail 'm afraid.

    Cheers

There is a problem with disconnection - we thought it was caused by people trying to grap the files too soon. It is being fixed ASAP. We have also ordered higher band width which will be in place in Jan 08.

Uploads are 340Kb this morning - data sent OK. I'm waiting for the call to say it's corrupt now. :?

I think that small files are okay, but with big ones the FTP server times out before transfer is complete. Go with sending them a CD instead, or uploading it to your own website and having them download it (not totally secure, though).

Re: Sending files to Capita via FTP (or not).

Please tell me that Capita are not asking for db files containing student's UPN numbers, date of birth, home addresses, whether the child is looked after by the local authority, ex-directory phone numbers, teachers contact and contract details, unencrypted, over a public network?????

I can't put my finger on it but something, and I not sure what, makes me (and Gordon Brown probably) a tiny bit twitchy about this.

    P.S. What's wrong with sftp?
