Is SOLUS 3 pretty much impossible to avoid at this stage?

Heard so many bad things about it over the years and dreading the day we need to (are forced) to move to it.

Is it pretty much a certainty that we're going to be forced to use it within the next 12 months or so because I'm really not looking forward to that day!

I was told by an advisor for sims not to move to solus 3, as it doesn't work

Yeah I've been advised similar over the past year or so!

What was the reasoning behind moving to SOLUS 3 over say releasing SIMS Upgrades in an MSI format?

There are plenty of threads on here discussing that but it always boil down to 'capita won't do it'

Though... do I remember @PhilNeal recently saying that it could be on the cards again? Or did I dream that in an upgrade induced fever sweat?

@PhilNeal I will personally drive over to Capita and kiss you if you make this happen*

I assume that would have been heard out of context - i.e. "I wouldn't use Solus 3-3.5 because it doesnt work on Server 2012/SQL 2012 yet" or similar.

    3.6 works rather well.

With SOLUS3, I unfortunately doubt they will bother.

For me, taken out of context or not doesn't really matter - I've seen SOLUS3 and wasn't impressed. I've got SCCM to handle software deployment, update and management so why do I need another software distribution mechanism (along with the attendant bit of client software for every PC) when my existing one works perfectly well?

While I admit there will be organisations for whom it fits a need perfectly and who will welcome SOLUS3 i.e. LAs supporting countless primary schools, for me as an end consumer it feels like an unnecessary reinvention of the wheel and a bit like an attempt to overly complicate the plumbing.

Arguing about something other than to Capita themselves is like piddling into the wind; you can avoid it by using solus 2 until it's discontinued or knocking up a workable (and wholly unssuported) method of doing it yourself. That's entirely possible of course, certainly with SCCM. So when S2 is ceased, are you going to stop updating in some sort of protest?

Re your comment regarding context, it was a directly reply to the comment "I was told by an advisor for sims not to move to solus 3, as it doesn't work" so yes, it does matter and nothing to do with you. I think many of us agree that an MSI solution would be better for us, that's not under discussion

This is basically my feeling on the subject as well. We use a PowerShell script to install and update SIMS. Shove a PC in the security group and it'll automatically install SIMS on next boot. When an update comes around, we change the version number in the script (to invalidate all existing installs) and the script blows away the existing SIMS install and runs the setups again. Schedule a reboot overnight after an upgrade and nobody will even know it's happened.

@synaesthesia We used SOLUS3 for about six months - had an update not applied correctly because of it, had to ring bedford countless times because of it. In the end it was jokingly known as the service desk ticket generation tool and we ditched it completely.

For us the product just did not work as intended, so the context makes absolutely no difference to me - I agree with the initial comment on the above basis - though perhaps I didn't quantify that in my earlier post.

I am really not looking forward to the day we absolutely have to reinstall it because there is so much negative baggage around our earlier experiences with it but if we have to go, we have to go.
