Hi
I've got a laptop here that was having some strange .NET framework issues and was throwing up common language runtime debugging services errors, which scuppered SIMS .Net.
I uninstalled/reinstalled all the .NET Framworks and SIMS .Net itself. I can now get to the login box and the SIMS .Net splash box comes up showing version 7.96. However, before SIMS loads I get "SIMS Connection failed for Login <username>, reason: 2". The connect.ini file is present and correct and the S: drive is mapped to the correct network share.
Does anybody know what this error means and what I need to fix the problem? Any help greatly appreciated - as always!
Sam

The reason and solution is documented on the Captia SupportNet - KB72234
But basically could be:
Excessive network traffic.
Incorrect connect.ini configuration.
Firewall problems
General network problems with this machine.
Instead of reinstalling, delete the Sims.NET folder under program files and run the install again.
Hope this helps.

Unfortunately we are supported by an LEA team and I don't have access to SupportNet.
Excessive Network Traffic - This problem only seems specific to this laptop. Network traffic is normal
Connect.ini file - Checked and re-checked - definitely the correct details.
Firewall problems - The laptop is on a range that is allowed through the firewall to see the admin network - can ping the SIMS server.
General Network problems - DHCP works fine, Reserved address working fine, DNS working fine - anything else I should be looking for here??
I did delete the SIMS folder and reinstalled from SIMSInst. Having exactly the same problem, splash screen shows with correct version details, and then Reason code 2 appears and goes back to login screen.
I'm stumped.

Does it happen with every user? if it doesnt then try this:
Uninstall Simsinfrastucture
Reboot
Delete Sims .net Folder
Run Simsinst.exe
It should now install simsinfracture, simsapps and simsmanuals.
Reboot
Run sims
It should install ampark
Try to log it. Thats how i sorted my problem out. Also check your sims.ini in windir is correct and try changing your connect.ini file to point directly to the sql server.
If it doesnt happen with every user and just certain one then its to do with the settings on your slq 2005.

the "Reason 2" error is def the local copy of connect.ini
Check it and ensure that it is one of 2 settings:
Code:
[SIMS Connection]
ServerName=SERVER\SIMS-INSTANCE
DatabaseName=SIMS_MORS
CommandTimeout=100000
Change SERVER to your SQL Server
and SIMS-INSTANCE to the appropriate Instance name for the SIMS Database
or
Code:
[SIMS Connection]
redirect=S:\SIMS
Change S:\ to the drive letter of your SIMS Shared Drive.

I am getting this exact error too. It happens on any user, but on only one particular machine. I have checked the Connect.ini and it is all fine (identical to the PC next to it, which works) i've done some test to check that the SQL server can be pinged by both its IP and resolve its name, and i still cant find anything wrong with the PC.
My LEA have no idea what it is either.

Morstar - Supportnet is available to all SIMS users and is extremely helpful - most peoples second port of call after EduGeek.

Re: SIMS Connection failed - Reason 2
Is the local connect.ini set to re-direct to a network one. This causes us problems on the odd machine here and there in various schools. Deleting the connect.ini and running SIMS .net to recreate it, pointing it directly at the database usually sorts the problem.

Try putting the SIMS server ip address and hostname in the hosts file. I recall this is how I stopped this error in the past.

Just sticking my oar in because i can and it's a shiny new one.
It's nothing to do with the fact that the system is being geared up to do single sign on is it.
there's some command to do with trusted which i guess is local to the machine, not sure how it all works, as i haven't finished reading the August release notes let alone September!
i got some strange login issues and noticed a whole host of new user accounts set up in enterprise manager and found it was linked to the move towards login using network credentials.
just a thought....

Re: SIMS Connection failed - Reason 2
Probably not the cause of your problem, but this is worth mentioning as it is related.
By default, SQL Express is installed with TCP/IP disabled, resulting in no connections working apart from direct from the server.

We had this - local support centre logged into server for an hour and reckoned everything was fine - their response "must be your clients - let us know how you go on"
Just noticed the service SQL Browser wasn't running - started the service and now all is fine! Go figure!
