    SIMS Server 100% CPU

Just a quick one our SIMS server cpu is nearly always at 100% does anyone have a clue why it would always be maxed out?

    SIMS.ldf is 10GB
    SIMS.mdf is 5.3GB

    server 2008 R2

    RAM always sits above 8GB

    any clues would be helpful

    Thanks

I assume your on the Spring Release? Have a search on here, it seems to be a known issue.

@mm3 - not the same isssue, but you need to look up threads regarding large ldf files too. 10GB is huge, and that won't help your server performance either.
You need to back up the DB and the transaction log files, and find a suitable method to shrink that ldf.
Check with your support - there is a patch file that can do it for you, or there are other rough and ready methods, but it depends on how comfortable you are with SQL.

The patch number @vikpaw referred to is 14265. Re-indexes the database tables and truncates the log file. It "should" put the database into Simple recovery mode too which should help prevent the log file from growing to huge sizes.

There is a batch file that just truncates the log too, but you might as well re-index as it will speed things up even more.
Oddly, my server has gone back into Full recovery mode and i'm not sure what did it. I ran that patch end of Feb but still seem to have a large LDF, obviously because of the FULL mode, though luckily it's not affecting performance, yet!

I've heard this batch file mentioned a few times. I presume it's available on SupportNet? If so, a ref number to download a copy would be great.

You have to request it. It's not a patch, but is referenced in KB104766.

Nothing special, as it does the same job, minus re-index, and if you have people off the system, you might as well reindex too.

It just writes the SQL commands to a temp file then runs them. Though i suppose it's useful if you wanted to script the tasks and shrink multiple DBs. It does different DBs, but is still gonna change your recovery model which i think is a bit dangerous anyway if you're not aware of the general setup.

I guess you LA cowboys might find it useful - i have the 2011 vintage i can ping you for a look.

Cowboys?! That was uncalled for!!! /flicks cigar cut away and pushes cowboy hat up

We use CentraStage so could be handy to set up so we can run overnight in our school if required. The 2011 version would be good. In the meantime, think I'll log a call and request a copy.

I've had a day of spiking today, but i'm hoping it's just cos the reports are due soon.

pleasure. there's another little goodie in there for ya too, but no instructions, so if it doesn't work, you'll have to alter your config to find the correct combo.
