    Deploying Discover. How to upgrade?

    Hi,

I've managed to get SIMS discover to install on a new machine using the below but it doesnt upgrade existing installs.

I cant seem to find any info in the guides we have about the command line options.

The client installer has the following command line properties:
INSTALLDIR - The installation directory (Defaults to %ProgramFiles%\SIMS\Discover Client)
SQLSERVER - The SQL Server instance that hosts the Discover database.
DATABASENAME - The name of the Discover database.
SIMSQLSERVER - The SQL Server instance that hosts the SIMS database.
SIMSDATABASENAME - The name of the SIMS database.

    e.g
    SIMSDiscoverClient.msi /quiet /log %TEMP%\client.log INSTALLDIR="C:\DiscoverClient" SQLSERVER="SRVR\SQLEXPRESS" DATABASENAME="Discover" SIMSSQLSERVER="SRVR\SQLEXPRESS" SIMSDATABASENAME="SIMS"
    Any ideas?

    Thanks

i'm pretty sure update has to be done via SOLUS3
So without that, you'd have to reinstall the new version rather than upgrade.

    Upgrading the client.

SOLUS 3 ive read makes life so much easier but we dont have access to it as its managed by our LEA.

They still dont support win 7 so a bit behind.

You can't do it automatically without SOLUS3.

You can manually run the client installer on each workstation and it will offer the option to upgrade.

    Nightmare,

I've read that you can just copy the c:\program files\sims\discover client folder from a working machine to another and it will work.

Any idead if this is true and if it breaks anything?

In theory, I "think" it should work but I would really play it safe and either do it manually, or get SOLUS3 installed.

you can upgrade the client using the command line installers easily but will need to do a mnual upgrade on the server. All of my schools upgrade the client from a login script

Any chance you could share/pm your script please?

Just tried deleting the discover client program files folder but get an unknown error logging in so there must be registry entries or files elsewhere.

Create a share on the server(my drive is G called installers and apply the security settings for users to be able to access

Copy the discover folders into this directory

Run the following on the server
    g:\installers\discover\Setups\ServerSetupFiles\Ser ver\SIMSDiscoverServer.msi /quiet INSTALLDIR="C:\Program Files\SIMS\Discover Services" SQLSERVER=server\sims2008 DATABASENAME=Discover SIMSSQLSERVER=server\sims2008 SIMSDATABASENAME=SIMS TRUSTEDCONNECTION=1

    g:\installers\discover\Setups\SIMSDiscoverClient.m si /quiet INSTALLDIR="C:\Program files\sims\Discover Client" SQLSERVER=server\sims2008 DATABASENAME=Discover SIMSSQLSERVER=server\sims2008 SIMSDATABASENAME=SIMS

and only this on the clients
    g:\installers\discover\Setups\SIMSDiscoverClient.m si /quiet INSTALLDIR="C:\Program files\sims\Discover Client" SQLSERVER=server\sims2008 DATABASENAME=Discover SIMSSQLSERVER=server\sims2008 SIMSDATABASENAME=SIMS

You will then need to upgrade the dicover datbase which needs to be done manually.

I upgrade Discover in all my schools using command lines - I don't do any manual upgrading for any part of the process. Apologies as some of this is duplicated from above but it's easier to just put the whole thing.

First I run the following on the server (just replace any instance names/database names as necessary):

    cd D:\Netapps\SIMS\setups\Discover\Setups\ServerSetup Files

    Discover.Setup.Server.Console --DeployDatabase --SQLSERVER="SIMSINSTANCENAME" --DATABASENAME="Discover" --TRUSTEDCONNECTION=1

    cd D:\Netapps\SIMS\setups\Discover\Setups\ServerSetup Files\Server

    SIMSDiscoverServer.msi /quiet /log %TEMP%\DiscoverServer.log INSTALLDIR="D:\Program Files\SIMS\Discover Services" SQLSERVER="SIMSINSTANCENAME" DATABASENAME="Discover" SIMSSQLSERVER="SIMSINSTANCENAME" SIMSDATABASENAME="sims" TRUSTEDCONNECTION=1 DATATRANSFERSCHEDULEDTASKTIME="00:00:00" USERSYNCSCHEDULEDTASKTIME="00:24:00" DATATRANSFERSERVICEACCOUNT="NT AUTHORITY\NetworkService" GROUPSYNCSERVICEACCOUNT="NT AUTHORITY\NetworkService"

    cd D:\Netapps\SIMS\setups\Discover\Setups

    SIMSDiscoverClient.msi /quiet /l %TEMP%\DiscoverClient.log INSTALLDIR="D:\Program Files\SIMS\DiscoverClient" SQLSERVER="SIMSINSTANCENAME" DATABASENAME="Discover" SIMSSQLSERVER="SIMSINSTANCENAME" SIMSDATABASENAME="sims"

Then the following on any workstations/terminal servers (first copying files to a local drive as I find the .msi doesn't run well from a network drive via cmd):

    cd D:\Netapps\SIMS\setups\Discover\Setups

    SIMSDiscoverClient.msi /quiet /l %TEMP%\DiscoverClient.log INSTALLDIR="D:\Program Files\SIMS\DiscoverClient" SQLSERVER="SIMSINSTANCENAME" DATABASENAME="Discover" SIMSSQLSERVER="SIMSINSTANCENAME" SIMSDATABASENAME="sims"

No need for any manual upgrades at all :-)
