    Report for emergency details

    I want to generate a report which outputs the following:

    Pupil details (name, reg, address, primary contact number), their linked parents/guardians and their phone numbers.

    However, it must be in an easy to read format - so not a giant malformed excel file with loads of text everywhere etc...

    My plan was to use the RTF output with a template which has a pupil per page.

    However, with my template, the number of pupils doesn't add up - I'm getting 529 instead of 541 which we have on roll.

    So, I thought I'd do it using XML and XSLT instead. But the XML file from what I can tell is somewhat malformed. With new records being defined left right and center, for sub-records but with no differentiating aspects or nesting.

    So, how do I do this, and get it displayed sensibly?

    Ok, looking at it closer, it is a valid XML file with schema, but it uses microsoft specific attributes... Which is annoying.

    is your report removing duplicates from your parent contacts?

    it's possible that your report is only capturing one sibling if so.

    I designed an OV8 report for our school, and was having a hell of a time with it until I realized I was eliminating some parents by not including duplicates.

    then I found my local authority support group had already designed one, and use that instead now.

    Tried it both ways. Both not right.

    I've got something with a csv file outputting at the moment, but it is ugly and difficult to read through.

    well I can't think your output method matters a bit - if you can get all 541 to export out in one format it should work in any other.

    You could get really ridiculous and make your CSV an excel file, then mail merge it to a word document - but I'd think an RTF report would be far more ideal.

    It has to be completely automatic. ie. Every day, the script runs and the data is stored on several designated laptops.

    your emergency data is going to change that often?

    regardless, I wouldn't seriously go the excel route, that was a bit of sillyness

    People update their contact details constantly. I'd say the person who does it changes at least 1 a day. We also have people coming and going regularly - at least 1 a week.

    This is what I've got in the RTF template (it is a table, but you can't see the lines online).

    Code:

    <RECORD START>

    Surname Forename Reg Address
    <Surname> <Forename> <Reg> <AddressBlock>
    Title Forename Surname Main Home Phone Main Telephone Mobile Alt Phone
    <Title> <ParentForename> <ParentSurname> <Main Home Telephone> <Main Telephone> <Mobile number> <Tel.>
    <RECORD END>
    The report is attached - it is currently set for csv output instead of RTF.

    You are page breaking on surname - you probably have siblings in the same reg group.

    I'm lucky that my first reg group has a brother and sister in it, so I saw that right away - went through, and every one of my siblings that are in a reg group together share a page.

    there's how I changed it a bit, but otherwise it's the same thing you gave me
