    SIMS data to Active Directory

    Hello all

I'm not sure this is the correct section for this. so sorry if its not.

Is there a tool / program for exporting information from SIMS to make our active directory users and groups.. possibly even mail lists? we are soon going to be managing our users ourselves (moving away from our LEA) and I just think SIMS will be the best thing to work from as it already knows all the staff students and timetable.

dose any one know of such a program or script?

If not I guess I'm going to have to make myself one

    Thanks
    Pete

I think the best you can do is create a report containing the data you want to export to a CSV, play with it in Excel, then use CSVDE to import it into AD.

I used SalamanderSoft Limited from a guy called richard willis in my old school worked a treat though there is a annual fee but it takes all the work out of new users etc.. and syncs with sims, can also send you an email when a new user is created.. richard will set it all up to your specifications.. i fully recommend.

Just noticed is says its synced with atomwides USO database that is linked with our SIMS here. You may be able to use it with the plain SIMS -> AD im unsure.

    Thanks fairm010

We currently user Atomwides ADSync but because we may be moving away from our LEA we wont have access to it any more. Inface looking at your username we use exactly the same service provided by RBWM

    Thanks Victory2012
I will look into this it sounds good!

Slapping myself for saying this but won't the ADP Tool that is used as part of SLG do this for you?

@rpwillis is the Richard of SalamanderSoft fame and I second the notion. It is very flexible and will create your user areas and set permissions too.
@GREED ADP from Capita will do it, it is available separately but is quite inflexible. Last I heard it still would not use admission number as a field and we use that for everything here.

It makes life so much easier when the student username doesn't change every year!

I published a powershell script I use for user creation on here a while back. I have made some improvements to it since then. I'm sure it could easily be adapted for sims and your environment.

    My script will
    • create users
    • add them to a yeargroup
    • add them in their yeargroup OU
    • handle withdrawn students
    • handle name changes
    • create home folders
    • assign permissions to the home folders.
    • send me an email of changes.

My user account (for students) creation is fully automated.

I have another script that puts students in AD groups based on their timetable. However it requires SQL access so may not adapt as well as the user creation script.

Yes, vikpaw that is my script. I have made less improvements than I thought. I didn't think I had the moving of users and their home directory's implemented in the one I published. I looked through the code and the only things I have added since I published is address verification and I changed my OU structure slightly.

The address verification simply checked the state, sometimes a comma would be entered in the database after the city putting the csv out of line.

The OU change was to put buildings before the years. So my new structure is

    • Students
      • HS
        • 2013

    vs

    • Students
      • 2013

This made in more manageable to apply settings to each building, specifically Google apps.

After I obfuscate the courses script I will post it too.
