I need to swap the server connection over as its only on 100MB at the minute and obviously everyone is moaning about the speed.
Is there any way, within SIMS or just on the server, to see who is connected? Just so I can pick a time when there isnt many people to disrupt (I dont want to stay really late
)

Nope never used sims, but i know an idea how you can get them all off, announce someone famous is in the staff room handing money out to all teachers. Then quickly swap over the connection lol

Yeah there is a way that I do it go into the Computer Management on the Server System Tools > Sessions and see how many ppl are connected
Hope this makes sense

Mr Tech
This allows you to see how long sessions have been inactive as well so you know whether to just boot staff off or contact them first.

Run Solus and use 'Sims Information' which will give you a current list of those people in SIMS.

Re: Is there a way to see who is using SIMS?
We use a freebie tool, sql Spy which shows real time sql connections and the relevant host name making the connection.
In my experience viewing sessions can be unreliable; some of our clients don't map an 's drive' and SIMS Info shows dead connections, mainly caused by laptop users closing the lid forcing a laptop in to standby.
Cheers.

Sorry but none of these methods is reliable (if I understand things properly). Connections to the server are tranisent at the moment because we wanted to be sure that MSDE would be viable. During 2008 we will move to permanent connections which will then provide a reliable test.

@Phil - is the permanent connection going to be through AD?
sorry if OT.. but we are migrating our staff users to a new domain, but not the SIMS server yet (under LEA control) - just wondering if there are likely to be any pitfalls with cross domain connections to SIMS?

This is too technical for me to answer so I'll have to ask someone and get back to you.
We won't force the use of AD if that answers your question.

I know this isn't a very technical solution, but why not just ask/tell your users to be out of SIMS between 1:00pm and 1:01pm?

Perhaps. Can't say you didn't warn them, though...

If you are just swapping over a network cable, then just do it and blame the weather, or Capita!
Most machines probably wont notice the difference, SIMs quite often goes into the "Not Responding" state and recovers...
