I've been working as a Technician in a primary school for the last 2 years and have just taken on the role of data officer as well. It's interesting reading all of the comments so far and scary to think of a world without result sets! Fortunately I am building the system from the ground up so I will be following this thread and the Data Managers group with interest.

Keep up with the good advice!

    Hi everybody
Just joined EduGeek as I was looking for a manual for SIMS DISCOVER.
I am a Data and Exams Officer, mainly dealing with Assessment and Exams. But Course Manager got recently added to my list, as now has Discover. Mostly definitely if you show some aptitude, you have a good chance in getting it added to your "area of expertise"! I had a look at Profiles (but SLT decided against it at the time) and have some experience with Admissions (covering when staff left). I like to get an overview of what SIMS can do as all the modules are linked together in one way or other and understanding how, gives me the opportunity to influence decisions which might have far reaching consequences in a different area.

    Hi Phil
That was the first place I looked, and looked and looked some more and could not find it! But I found a link from BKGarry in a different thread on this forum. I think he got it from Capita Support Net.

Wow, fascinating thread. Sorry I haven't really been back to reply myself but I have been up to my eyes learning my new job! New group for Data Managers looks like an excellent resource. Sure I will be back with many many questions once I get properly started.

ETA: Qwerty72, do you have a link to the overview you mentioned? I've been trawling the SIMS documentation looking for something along these lines. Thanks.

The diagram I posted on 4 Feb does show the relationships between the modules.

Hello ICT Lady and forum posters

I'm a new data manager too, nearly 4 weeks into the job now.

I've found this forum and Capita's own forum really good for gaining knowledge.

I am similar to you ICT lady, no previous SIMS or schools experience, but I am an experienced IT professional with an excellent database and application development background.

My first impressions are that the Assesment modules are very important and once you understand Aspects, Results Sets, Grade Sets and Results you are well on the way to becoming a SIMS guru !

I like the 'design reports' utilities as it is very intuative and needs very little training and empowers you to analyse the data for your SLT

    Regards

    Phil
