Installing a SIMS server

I what to install the new SIMS server but my NM will is not keen on doing it. He says there might be problems connecting it to the network. Is this possible is it very risky installing a server. We have a RM CC3 network so it is using active directory. I correctly reinstalled the NAS box after it died. We would have to do the SIMS migration any way. I mean as long as the server is patched up to date, virus protected and the right place in AD what else needs to be done. I what the experience he does not.

Why don't you try it with a VM or a test box first and see how you get on - safe AND fun incase it all goes tits up

The SIMS server shouldn't be a danger to the rest of the network if you're running it as a member server.

The server tends to be more stable than the clients.

Then again, are you about to install the SIMS server software on machine which is already running other applications and/or databases?

To TeddyKGB: I don't have a windows 2003 license to do a test install with.

I think this a load of rubbish I said that we connect PC up that are non RM and that works he says they are different they are not important unlike the sims server.

Then the 180 day trial of 2003 server is your friend

I don't use CC3 (vanilla network here), but personally I sure as hell wouldn't let any of that malignant RM stuff go anywhere near something as important as SIMS

Not true...

Build a box, Install server 2003, Add to domain, make member server, install SQL 2005 and install SIMS..

Remember that you ahev to Map a drive on the client machines to the SIMS folder on the server...

We have M: Mapped to \\server1\sims\

RM CC3 will not have any problems accepting your sims server as a member server. Install windows 2003 add it to the domain as you would a desktop and then install sims as easy as that! The SIMS install can be a little tricky but if you follow Capitas instructions it should go through without a problem. Your NM doesn't know much about CC3 does he? lol CC3 won't cause any probs as its just a management layer on top of MS windows. We've had SIMS running fine on a CC3 network and now on vanilla just upgraded to a new server but everything works!
