    SIMS Server

Our SIMS server system partition is running out of space, not much space for SIMS left - we have lots of unallocated space. Do you guys know of a easy free way to re-size disk partitions? So I dont have to rebuild the server.

    Cheers

    Re: SIMS Server

Are you saying that SIMS is installed into the system partition? If so, I had this problem and discovered that it is possible to move SIMS to another partition.

I believe full destructions are available from Capita.

Do you mean moving the MDF and LDF file? If so, this is what I want to do.

Yes but it isn't as simple as that... speak to your local support people or Capita to get the instructions. You basically have to move the files, re-install the instance of SQL and run DBATTACH (or something) to re-connect the moved database.

One of the big problems with the backups is that when an upgrade is performed it takes a full copy of the database (no compression), then compresses it and then deletes the copy.... hence you need about twice as much free space as the size of your database.

I believe that 'back in the day' there was a bug with SIMS that meant it must be installed on the system drive... obviously this isn't optimal anyway so moving it is a good idea.

    Re: SIMS Server

regarding moving the SIMS db to another location - yes you will have to move the ms sql folder as per instructions the following...

    1) i'd copy the sims.ldf and sims.mdf from you ms sql folder - typically c:\program files\microsoft sql server\mssql$sims\data - there you should find your sims.ldf and.mdf
    2) i would remove sql server (SIMS) from add\remove program files
    3) delete the instance of sql server (MSSQL$SIMS) from your program files folder.
    4) reinstall SQL Server on another partition (d
    5) use dbattach to re attach your sims.ldf and .mdf files to your sims system
    6) go into SIMS and make sure that is stll works...

but before all that i would request a copy of shrinkdatabase.bat from your LA or capita as this will shrink your SIMS db and give you some free space on your server (or download the one i've uploaded with this post ...

    hope this helps?
