    re: SIMS & MSI

having an msi to update would possibly mean that the user wouldn't need admin permissions to access sims and that it would be updated more regularly so its available there and then for when the teachers need it

( the teachers here only use it once a month say, and they cause a fuss because they need me to do the upgrade for half and hour, i think they'd prefer to lose an hour over the course of the month to have it there and ready for them, it would also make it look less like i was solely to blame for sims not working on demand!)

Obviously I can only speak for our own site, but all our PCs turn on about 30 minutes before they're needed, giving them time to install any MSIs which are owing them, update the virus def files and so on.

    Same here.

an MSI would make the whole thing more painless.

Surely this is a non-point though Phil?

People (eg your CUSTOMERS) are asking for it, shouldn't it be supplied?

    re: SIMS & MSI

Ours our turned on before registration so this would help.

However, the real key benefit for me would be an unattended MSI based install for the initial installation - the current method is a complete pain.

    Cheers

How will MSI get SIMS onto clients any faster than our upgrade system? Are teachers' machines switched on before going into registration?
Using Wake On Lan function one could get them to power on and install a group policy allocated MSI and even schedule it for before school opened.

Failing that even walking round for an hour before hand and manually turning them on would do the same thing.

Booting them up logging on and manually running SIMS launcher would take considerably longer and mean starting in the middle of the night.

Notices could be sent out to teacher to tell them to launch SIMS manually first thing but the chances are with 100 teacher and 9-10 updates a year it's going to have a fair few non compliant situation

Thanks to everyone (except tosa925 obviously) for helping with this. Domino - we have a system of voting requests on SupportNet that gives customers a very strong say in what we do. MSI really hasn't featured there yet.

So what is a higher priority - cuting the size of the upgrade package or MSI? Please don't say both!

    Personally I'd say an MSI.

It'd be less painful - especially for us, with a split site and slow fibre link, we could send one from each domain controller, rather than all from a single SIMS server

    re: SIMS & MSI

I would vote for MSI. We already have mechanisms in place to cope with deployment of large MSIs, so the size is of less importance than the other flexibility we will get.

Why not - they're both valid points?

It would be nice to have an MSI to install SIMS and it would also be nice to have faster, less bandwidth sucking updates as well.

Personally since we started using Lesson Monitor and our SIMS machines went from 35ish Admin PCs to 120 regularly using SIMS all day long, updates have been a bit of a nightmare. Not to mention when we have a training session and two PC suites of 30 are trying to update all at the same time.

I experimented with running a batch file that that ran SIMSLoad when the machine stared but had limited success and it seemed to be random luck if a PC took the upgrade properly.

I ended up changing the SIMS shortcuts that our staff see to just point to Pulsar.exe and let SIMSLoad run in the staff logon script. This seems to be the best option for us since it only checks for an upgrade once a day (unless the PC is switched off) and speeds up getting at LM. I've had no complaints since I did this - people even thanked me for "speeding it up".

Phil, I know I've heard these points mentioned at SIMS roadshows in the past, I'm just surprised that they haven't been voted for on the web site (not that that makes a difference in many cases :? ).

Please remember that the change request number for an MSI installer is 13392 on the Capita Supportnet website. There is a link to the relevant Change Request here.

    Please vote for it!

    re: SIMS & MSI

i'd prefer an msi than a smaller update, and possibly an update msi rather than the semi manual way its done at the moment.

Well i thinkl you need to speak to Stockton-on-Tees borough then. afaik *not one* school has managed to make the auto update work 100%, and in our case we're lucky to get a 20% success rate. The girls in the admin office have full admin rights over their PCs and autoupdate has never worked properly.

BTW i know what im doing aswell, i have *never* found a single app i cannot deploy remotely barring SIMS, and we have some very weird and wonderful apps which were never designed to go on a network.

So this says one thing to me, either your software doesnt work properly, your manuals are mis-leading/wrong or the info you pass down the line is wrong.

All of the above coulod be solved with an msi. I just cant understand why your fighting it soo much, i know capita have got the funding so just do it

MSI without question. Even a smaller update will still impact upon the users, require specific security rights and generate lots of calls to the helpdesk; the MSI would remove all of these problems.
