Solus 3 and Computer Name Changes
Hi Solus 3 Fans!!
Does anybody know how Solus 3 deals with Computer name changes?? Since returning to school I've had to change a number of computer names which already have the agent installed on, for example "laptop-head" to "laptop-deputy"
Prior to Solus 3, this wouldn't make a blind bit of difference to SIMS, but now I'm noticing that if I load up Solus 3 UI, the old name still appears, if I go in and click update environment nd browse computers, I can see the new name (which in effect is the same machine) I then get a message telling me that an agent is already installed... If I try an uninstall from the interface for that machine name, it won't work, as it can no longer find that machine on the network, so I then have to visit the machine to uninstall the agent manually only to then go back on the Solus 3 UI to re-install the agent again!
Surely I shouldn't have to do all this? Can't the Solus 3 detect the name changed from the GUID??
Hopefully this is a "feature" which is being addressed??
Thanks,
Matt

10th September 2012, 09:09 PM #2 Having to do the same here for rebuilds, before I can rebuild a workstation which is a Sims machine I have to first remove the workstation from the Solus 3 Gui and then once the workstation has rebuilt add it to the deployment group.
As we have approx 150 sims workstations this can be a pain especially when we have just rebuilt the whole school.
I do hope that something can be done as the last 2 weeks has been a nightmare, slowly working my way through it but it seems that Solus 3 is still a little flakey.
Workstation Solus agents keep stopping randomly (odd ones not all) but this can be a pain.
Anyway hopefully it will get better as time goes on like Sims hehe!

11th September 2012, 09:48 AM #5 Pretty sure the name is written in the config file, not 100% if changing it will fix it.

11th September 2012, 01:57 PM #6 I've been told you need to update the config and the solus3.agent table. I'm thinking generating a new GUID would be better then just re-adding them to the SIMS definition?

This is rubbish!!
And should be well documented within the administrators guides but I can see nothing! This is quite a common task renaming workstations!
So we now have to:-
1 - Remember to remove the agent before changing the name (or if we forget go and do a manual uninstall of the agent)
2 - Remove the old computer name from the SOLUS 3 UI
3 - Go into Update Enviroment within SOLUS3 and find the same computer with the new name
4 - Re-install the agent back onto the machine we have just removed it from, now with the new name
5 - Change settings in both the config and the solus3.agent table
This is madness...
We use SOPHOS here for our Anti-Virus, this is also deployed from a console similar to SOLOS3.... I don't seem to get any issues with the Sophos install if I rename these machines, and if I look back in the Sophos Management Suite, the new computer names is visable and the old name is gone... shorly something similar can be achieved by Capita?

11th September 2012, 04:47 PM #8 No. If you rename a computer - remove solus3 manually, THEN rename the computer, then reinstall it (via the console) with the new name.
They're working on fixing it so you don't have to remove solus3 then reinstall it. Just to rename the computer. The issue is if you install s3 on a machine, then clone it, you could end up with 100's of renamed computers. It's not a simple as you may think to deal with. Sophos isn't a new product like s3, so it's going to be more... fined tuned?

Thanks... I understand about the sysprep/cloning etc and having 100's of computers with the same name etc (i had this issue when i first olled out Sophos and loned the workstations!) but this wasn't the issue this time...
Hopefully they will get it sorted soon!

I don't think you can just reinstall without removing it unless it changed recently? I think last time I tried it (admittedly a while ago) Solus3 just complained that a Solus Agent was already installed.

11th September 2012, 10:32 PM #11 Lol, re-read my post.
1/ remove solus3 manually
2/ THEN rename the computer
3/ then reinstall it
I think you're over worked and in need of a holiday mate

hell yeah. solus 2 is fine for me. the workstation upgrades at first use, and it doesn't take that long. if i really wanted i could script simsload to run overnight. i don't have time to mess around while you boys find bugs and get frustrated. i'm gonna skip the hype and wait for the app or web based version.
