Hide network icon in finder

Hello there,

I am close to rolling out my configured mac client across to the music mac suite we have here, but I have one thing I dont want the kids to see. The 'Network' icon under 'Computer'. I have removed it from the sidebar so thats not an issue, just would like this one to disappear so stop them from playing around on the system.

I have tried hiding it using the following code:

But this does nothing on this case. Has anyone got any ideas? I will still be looking around on the internet, but so far ive found nothing regarding this one :cool:

No i haven't got anywhere with this unfortunetly. I'm back on this now as im setting up a clean mac for imaging.

Have you found anything more to this, or has anyone else managed to do this?

Is this OS X Lion or what exactly. I have OS X Lion at home so can have a bit of a play. @AntonioRocco ( http://www.edugeek.net/members/antoniorocco.html ) will be able to help, maybe ping him a message

How are you managing the apple macs, have you got an OS X Server or what exactly ?

Am guessing you may be able to get rid of the network option via the plist files ( editing one of them ) or something along those lines.

If using an OS X Server it may be an MCX pref file that needs adjusting / pushing out etc

This is running leopard. I'm trying to convince the music department to upgrade to lion, but so far have been unsuccessful lol.

Also would be nice to remove the hard drive icon from here too to prevent the students messing around :)

I know on the client before imaging the client - if you have the desktop selected --> finder --> preferences or is it view --> preferences

You can untick the checkboxes to stop it from showing the network, hard drives etc

Not sure if this is of any use to you ??

I have this already set and this only removes the items from the side bar or the desktop :)

Without the admin password, there's not a lot they are going to be able to do even if they do have access to the HDD.

My google fu isn't working today but I did remember that post

Ive managed to hide the hard drive with the link you posted :) I used the command: sudo chflags hidden /Nameofthedrive.

Regarding the network icon, i've left it as it is, but I have changed all the permissions on all the shares, so they can only see what they are ment to. This will be fine for me :)

I ended up with the same solution (checking all permissions on all shares). It appears to be secure but removing the network icon would still be useful (security by obscurity). If I come across a solution I'll post it.
