Lion server was a mid point for this. Part of the options were in the Server app and the other half was handled by Server Admin Tools. Personally I'm going to miss the Server Admin Tools. I found them to be more useful. Seemed to have more fine grain control over everything but similar to Apples ideas with other applications they strive to make it more consumer'ish rather than practical. Will see how it goes. Already I've seen a few options that are not in Lion that I had with SL Server. ML Server will remove even more

Workgroup Manager works fine on 10.7 Server. As does all the server Admin tools. The Server.app is crap to be honest. Creating or modifying a sharepoint is a crap shoot.

But there are a number of options that have been removed that are in Server Admin for 10.7 that were in 10.6. They removed them and crammed them into "Server" app. As for 10.8 from what I understand we will be losing Server Admin and WGM as WGM is replaced by the Profile Manager entirely.

I already have one Profile Manager server than looks after all of our iOS devices and today just started on a separate server to handel all of our desktops and laptops.

I would agree its been made very basic. It will come down to terminal to do more advance configuring of services.

Indeed! Me and @Rozzer spent a bit of time trying to get it to work properly with our iMacs and Active Directory users and the end conclusion was giving up and going back to the WGM way of doing things!

Yeah, I was not willing to use profile manager in lion server for mac management as I could see it was a massive downgrade, I just used it for iOS. But looks like there will be no choice but to use it in ML Server. If it has not improved much, and third party options look really expensive I may consider writing my own version of WGM for mountain lion or hacking WGM to work.

Yeah I tend to avoid profile manager for workstation management and would only install it for IOS management.

Fingers crossed it gets better with 10.8

I'm currently planning a switch over in the Summer holidays from a 10.6 Server and WGM to a 10.7 Server and Profile Manager. I'm still working my way through a test setup to make sure I can replicate all of my preference settings in WGM with Profile Manager. If 10.8 server is stable when it comes out, I might take an early plunge to that if it can manage more!

So far we are only using Profile Manager with our iPads, and it seems to work pretty well.

Personally if I were you I would wait a few months. The first releases are always suggested to avoid. Also do you have any 10.5 clients on your network because they will not work with 10.7 LDAP.

I have a client with 10.7 OD server and it works fine managing there 10.5 clients.

Yeh, I do usually tend to avoid first releases like the plague for production environments!

We are planning on upgrading to Lion clients and Server though in the Summer, depending on my tests. We don't have anything older client-wise than 10.6.7.

I'll probably leave it a year before Mountain Lion.

I have had a few issues crop up after its up and running with managed preferences before. But its been rare for me to do a 10.7 server setup with 10.5 clients still present. Lets be honest 10.5 machines are usually 4-5 years old now and the upgrade is so cheap!
