OSX Lion HOSTS file being ignored
I have edited the hosts file on my macbook running Lion 10.7.4 but whatever changes I make they are ignored.
After a lot of googling I have found that the hosts file is 2nd in the list when resolving addresses. It uses the my DNS server 1st.
There are a lot of suggestions on the web about putting the modifications at the top of the hosts file and making sure the file is still in the correct format but nothing seems to work. There is also a suggestion to install a local DNS server on the machine but I dont want to do that.
Can anyone shed any light on whats going wrong. Has anyone successfully modified the hosts file on their mac?

edit the file resolv.conf in /etc with the line:
order hosts, bind
However if you use DHCP whenever you re-lease your IP this file will be overwritten so you will need to be on a manual IP for this to work properly. You will need to put this line before nameserver too.
