I have inherted a nice turquoise powermac G3 from my dad. very nice of him to give it to me for free, only 1 little problem, it does not boot at all. It starts to boot, but nothing happens, the power light comes on but there is no display.
I have tried changing the memory with some that works, but it still doesn't work.
Does any one have any ideas?

Re: Power mac G3 won't start
Hi
It may be that the backlight on the display has died.
Before going down that road, do you have and original boot CD for it?
Try booting from cd (hold C key down when switching on with cd in drive)
Alternatively you can boot from another mac if you have one.
Join them with a firewire lead and switch on the faulty ont holding the T key down to boot in target mode
If either of these work you should be able to use disk utility to check the hard disk - if not could be a hdd problem

There is no display on this mac, its the powermac g3 tower, not the imac that looked like a monitor.
unfortunatly I have no cd's for it, I think my dad picked it up from a car boot sale.
I don't have access to any other macs, so connecting it via a firewire port is out of the question.
Would it boot from a linux live cd?

Re: Power mac G3 won't start
Hi
If you get no video (black screen) and cannot here any noise from inside, drive spinning, it is probably a PSU issue.
Repair/replace is probably not worth it.
PS. The Blue and white G3 towers don't target disc or boot by FireWire.

Thanks for the advice, I've been blessed with a G4 tower now, my dad got it for me off ebay, it all works fine so i think i'll just use the G3 for spares.
