Perian - The swiss-army knife of QuickTime components
helps if you go to the link, I normally use Plex
http://www.plexapp.com/
Much better then front row and you can get it to link to imdb and tvdb ( think thats the site ) and it pulls down all the info etc and plays mkv's brilliantly not sure about a stand alone mkv codec for macs - would be good to know if there is one though.
http://www.matroska.org/downloads/others.html
It states mplayer - there is also mplayer extended
With VLC on OS X it will help if you put the video playback to open GL instead of default and try again.

Up to you if you do or not was just showing you that they were showing you mplayer or vlc etc and also mentioned that there is mplayer extended
MPlayer OSX Extended
I use plex here much better then front row, takes a little configuring

yes - you go into the preferences - think its under system or somewhere around there you can tell it which type of remote and lots of other settings

Another stupid question....
Some of my videos are not widescreen. So i get the black bars on the right and left, is there a way to make the video fit the screen without having to change the resolution of the machine?
Thanks

18th October 2009, 01:28 PM #9 I have not got any videos like that but if you use your keyboard and press the right or left ( think its the right one ) arrow key that is - I think you get more options with ref to aspect ratio etc

As for how it works with an apple remote I have a Mac Pro ( desktop ) not a laptop or an iMac so could not tell you for sure.
I just got apples bluetooth keyboard and use the keyboard for controlling everything ie volume, etc
