applications showing as ?

Does anyone know why some applications show up on the dock as a ?

Ive gone into workgroup manager on the Xserve to select the applications to be allowed for the group which has imacs in it, some of which i had so share the C: drive of another mac to see the apps that wont appear on the Xserve ie: Final Cut Express and select that app to appear in the list. The same process was done to set the app to appear on the dock.

When i now logon to the an imac, the icons that i had to add that reside only on macs and not the server appear as a ?. The app runs ok and then the icon will change to what it should look like. But when the imac is logged out and back in again the same thing happens.

When it shows the ? in the dock it means that the applicaction no longer exists on the machine

The thing is its does. When you click on the ? relating to the program it runs, and then the icon will change to the correct icon.

I dont know if im doing something wrong when i add the application in workgroup manager. All i am doing is sharing the applications folder on an imac then on the server i go into workgroup manager,find the group where i have the macs, choose the dock preferences then find the mac where i just shared the applications folder and choose the application i want to appear in the dock.

Hope this makes sense and i am really new to macs.

Not 100% sure why this is happening, but I have another way round it.

What I would do is install Workgroup Manager on one of the iMacs that has all the applications you want to add (just copy/paste it from the XServe). Open it, connect to the XServe there, add the applications. That has certainly worked for us with no problems.

Wonder if they're showing up as ?'s because it's looking for the application in a slightly strange place (as you added it from a share on the XServe).

I know this sounds stupid... But have you tried removing the icon from the dock and adding it again?

That's fixed it for me a few times.
