    Network Software Update???

    Hello

Currently our macs do not automatically download updates from apple. When I log on the them as the local admin the software update dialogue pops up and it downloads the updates from the web.

What I would like to happen is for them to download the updates themselves in the background. What would be even better is if our xserver could download them and dish them out.

If any of that possible? I know I could send package files using ard but I was looking for something more automatic.

    Re: Network Software Update???

    Hi Darren

    Long time no see.

Ok, if you are using 10.4 Server you have the option of using it as an update server. Documentation on it is on the OSX Server site or can be found on a search on macenterprise.org.

The other option is to push each package out from the server, again instructions can be found on the macenterprise.org site (Geoff Franks is the person doing this ... I am sure there is a webcast in the archives dealing with it.)

We have just redone the Mac side of things here so this is what we will be looking at shortly too.

    Re: Network Software Update???

    Hello. Been really busy ops:

Hmmm. We are on tiger on the desktops but the server is panther. I have put down an upgrade for the dev plan in april as tiger server is s'posed to resolve some of our .local and disc imaging issues. I will add this as another reason for the upgrade.

    Thanks a lot.

    Darren

PS - Just got a gorgeous intel mac here at home. Hmmmmmm.

Why is it that everyone has really nice new kit apart from me. I still haven't managed to get out and pick up iLife 06 or iWorks 06 yet.

I'm off to sulk, and work out how I can justify a MacBookPro in the budget for next year.

Tony: Sorry for being ignorant-- how did your Mac training day go? Hope it went well in any case.

Software Updates: Tony is right- a Mac OS Server option for updates is a great idea.

    Re: Network Software Update???

I couldn't make it due to family circumstances, but Stephen and David (NM and one of the techies) did and gained a real insight into OSX administration.

We hope to set aside some time next week to follow it up with more configuration changes.
