    Bangs head on desk!
Did the machine actually come with Mountain Lion? If it was a Snow Leopard machine which got upgraded, this might why that happened to you.

If the above is the case then may need to get Snow Leopard installation disc(s) and get snow leopard installed ( if possible get snow leopard 10.6.4 or later bootable media ) and then go from there

I may have a snow leopard bootable DMG that I got direct from apple ( will check tonight when at home ) if this helps at all ?

Indeed, but Apple stopped including recovery discs when Mac's starting coming without optical drives.

I'm surprised they sent it to you for free since the Lion flash drive that Apple used to sell was quite expensive IIRC (£50-£60?).

Called apple support number , think it was 08 type number ie 0870 or 0845 etc ( whatever it is ) and explained everything esp with the mac mini having a 5400 rpm normal laptop hdd installed from factory and with only having an ADSL line was just explaining how slow it was etc ( exagerated a lot on the slowness part ) and that iLife did not allow me to install from the App Store as it originally came up saying I had some software that I could claim, went through the process of claiming for the software ( iLife ) and it just vanished and that I needed physical restore media , he asked his supervisor / manager and just got approved, 3 days later I got both the DVD Installer for iLife and a memory stick with OS X Lion on it

    That's how I roll ..... :P

@CHR1S. If you have a spare (8GB+) USB flash drive, I may have something you might be interested in.
