does it try to get an IP, you could try different Ethernet Cables or another socket. What is it like with air port?

I turned IPv6 off in the network settings, that got my mac working great. Give it a try

Lot of if's not covered here. Are you getting a light on the switch in the closet to show physical connection?

Is the switch configured with MAC security?

And is the Ethernet Port on the mac enabled and set to get from DHCP?

Also yah always kill IPV6 on the Mac unless you know you need it.

Thanks for the reply, but I have got a Macbook now and never had a problem with that, it was an old Powrbook. I think it was a driver issue in the end.

    thanks
