"Documents" folder on OSX - students saving work to the local machine...

    Hello!

We've got some lovely iMacs in music, which work great for music on Garageband and Logic, but are a bit flaky when using Office etc...

Anyways, the kids are occasionally saving into the default "Documents" folder on the local machine rather than their H drive. Is there a way to force Office to save into the H drive by default or restrict access to Documents to they have to chose a folder? All via a script or Workgroup Manager?

    Thanks in advance!

You could make a login script that removes the local user directory and then makes a symlink to the network drive.

    rm -rf ~/Documents
    ln -s /Volumes/$USER ~/Documents

on 10.8 (not sure about lower revisions) there is a checkbox in the advanced settings of the directory utility for something like force local home directory. uncheck this and it should use the network home drive without having to map the H: drive. Also i'm not sure if existing docs/files will be copied over automatically.

Sorry for the vague answer but i'm new to macs and can't remember the exact terminology
