    Welcome to the 21st century.

The culture at school is a lot different to how it was 10 years ago let alone if your older then that.

As has been said before, the teenagers of today are the first generation to not know what it is like to live without computers / internet. Therefore the way teaching and learning is approached now, has to include technology and if it means giving kids 5 mins free time to play games online then so be it. Its a quick win and you can concentrate on the kids that take longer to finish the assignments and obviously need more help.

All that and im a techie not a teacher

Game based learning is a massive area and can really add a lot to what / how students learn. Look at the use of Myst by Tim Rylands or the work of Graham Brown-Martin on Handheld Learning ...

However, many of the sites that students use are just down to time wasting ... and there are examples of teachers telling kids to 'go and play games' for 5-10 minutes (or even complete lessons) rather than teach a full lesson ... so you can imagine how well this goes down with SMT.

I do think the occassional access is fine ... but it gets abused, so it gets blocked.
