Link 1: The Blitz Map 1940 Britain's Finest Hour

The Blitz began on 7 September 1940 when London was attacked by 350 bombers, escorted by 600 fighters. The air raid started at 5.00pm and lasted for almost 12 hours; 430 Londoners were killed and 1,600 injured during that first night of bombing. London was then bombed for 57 consecutive nights, but the Blitz continued throughout Britain until May 1941.

Photos from our collection have been geotagged on the Google map below to show buildings and areas of London damaged or destroyed in the Blitz, and some of the places that were used as shelter by Londoners. Just click the image or pin on the map to find out more.
