One of our staff borrowed my Office 2007 installation disk and activation code. I though she was putting it on a her school laptop but I just found out she stuck it on her laptop from home.
So how do I break it to her that she has done a naughty, without upsetting her or any other staff that have done the same trick.

Just tell her the school aren't covered for non school pc's and that the copy she has on her laptop is therefore illegal... not much more you can do really.
I've always avoided giving teaching staff vlk keys as they have a habit of using them on their relatives, next door neighbors and god knows who's elses machines if given the chance. I try to install it for them or give them a cd and ensure they return it the day after to minimise the chances of copies being made.
keep your software and licences in a secure location.
Inform the person who line manages staff member that they have borrowed said disk and installed in on non school property for use which is not covered by the licencing agreement and risks criminal prosecution against the head/governors and have breached the schools policy on "insert x, y and z".
Request the software is uninstalled.
Request an email confirming the above has been done from the teacher.
Get a teacher quote for Office 2007 or download and issue said teacher with alternatives.
(Ensure you have or quickly draft and gain approval a policy to cover this in future and stick it with the other policies they never bother to read.)

Use shame initially - mention she (and any teachers) can pick up Office 2007 for about £30, so there's no excuse for piracy. Leave FAST flyers around your office, with the rewards ringed in biro.Quote:

While she may be your line manager, you're the one tasked (right?) with ensuring license compliance. If an employee thinks they can take the michael, it's your job to wield the lead pipe until they toe the line.
If it's not a successful outcome, talk to her line manager regarding her behaviour. She's stealing from the school and leaving you open to a civil prosecution.

If you dont you will everyone installing licenced software on 8 of their houshold computers, and any they want to sell on ebay ..... and when the head/Govs get the brown stuff thrown at them who do you think the scapegoat will be?
Very bare minimum it needs to be reported to his/her line manager and needs to be informed that knowingly exceeding your licencing agreement is a criminal offence .... were talking (if punished to the maximum by courts) prison time here (for the head/Gov's) if it gets out of hand.

Might be an idea to introduce them to the Home Use Program that will let them get a home use copy for 9 pounds as long as you guys have a volume agreement Microsoft Home Use Program - Only £8.95 for Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2010. The software suite includes Word, Excel PowerPoint, Outlook, Publisher, Access and more!
The low cost may help ease the transition.
