    Unhappy KMS/VAMT/Activation

    Can someone please explain VAMT/KMS!

    Here's the setup:
    • Recently purchased an OV-EES agreement for Windows 8 & Office 2013.
    • Setup VAMT 3.0 with necessary updates on a server 2008 R2 machine.
    • Added the KMS keys from VLSC for Windows 8.1 Enterprise into VAMT
    • Created windows image, installed on PCs.
    • In VAMT, selected PCs, clicked Update License Status, then Install Product Key - Chose the 8.1 KMS key (assuming this is wrong?), clicked activate.

This worked on like 15, now it won't activate anymore, "The activation server determined that the specified product key could not be used."

However, Office 2013 is working fine...activating no problemo.

    To try *fix* it I've:
    • checked dns settings for vamt
    • used the slmgr /rearm command on the clients
    • installed the key for mac to kms conversion
    • reimaged machine

KMS (key management server) is designed to be installed on one computer/server and then your clients would connect to that server and licence themselves from that.

Following the process you were trying to, you should be using a MAK (multiple activation key) which gives you a larger number of activations and doesn't check in with a server anywhere.

So you can either install a Server 2012 / 2012R2 key on a KMS host somewhere and then update all you clients to use the KMS client Key or you can input your MAK key into VAMT and then use VAMT to send the new key back out if that makes sense?

So would the correct process would be:

Change the actual servers key to our new Server 2012 KMS Key
Add the Windows 8.1 KMS Key to VAMT
In VAMT select a Windows 8 PC
    Click Update license information
Click Install Product Key selecting "Automatically select a KMS client key (GVLK)"
    Click Activate

After doing that I receive the error "The Software Licensing Service reported that the computer could not be activated. No Key Management Service (KMS) could be contacted. "

If for the product key I instead select our new Win 8 KMS key I receive the error: "The activation server determined that the specified product key could not be used."

*Activation for Office 2013 works flawlessly without an intervention!

    Help!!

If you are using KMS client keys then you need to configure your server as a KMS host. If you are just using VAMT then use the MAK keys.
You can still use VAMT after you configure KMS

How many PCs are you wanting to activate windows on?

What you need to do is setup one KMS Server which is via a couple of command prompts, this takes the KMS key and activates against MSFT.

Your workstations don't specifically need a product key, however you can enter one of these - Appendix A: KMS Client Setup Keys as appropriate this tells them you need to find a KMS somewhere on the network to activate from not MS.

Once that is done you will be fine, it takes a minimum number of machines on the network before they activate from KMS.

    Hmm,

    On the server I've:

run the cmd slmgr /ipk (server 2012 kms key)
net stop sppsvc && net start sppsvc
Using VAMT to activate computers still won't work however - It will only activate the 10 or so I've already done...

I've checked DNS and the _VLMCS is there pointing to the correct server.

I've also used the key you mentioned @john and it won't activate, I've also done that to a PC that will activate, which then wont activate, but when I use VAMT again it does activate!

I keep reading that there is a minimum limit of 25 - however how come these first few would activate?

I have never used the VAMT tool when I looked at it in an earlier version it was a mess and didn't really give anything useful to it maybe it has improved since then. What exactly is the VAMT tool doing to the machines for you?

You do need a minimum number of machines polling for activation before it will spring into life - Understanding KMS gives you more information on what those numbers / combinations are.

Have you got the minimum number of machines with the key from that technet in them trying to activate against the KMS?

So, you see all the machines in VAMT, but it only activates 10?

Yeah, I was being a complete idiot. I assumed it used the CSVLK key for Windows, but I've basically totally made a mess of it!

I don't have the 25 on windows 8 yet, my plan was to strategically place win 8 PCs around and ease staff into it.

I currently have 15 PCs on Windows 8, I don't want any more as yet. I'm going to use the MAK key on them for now, and reset them back to GSVLK when I'm ready for enough PCs.

I'm assuming if I set my current Win 7 workstations to GSVLK they won't count towards the same count as Windows 8?

What is confusing me is doesn't office need 25 workstations also? This is activating without issue or any intervention...from when I started with only 3 PCs :S

I think your Win 7 machines will count maybe worth sticking the key from technet into a few of them to get to the minimum number needed

So, in the suite which runs windows 7 pro I've removed the MAK that was purchased before our EES. I then ran slmgr /ato, which hey presto, they're activated with KMS.

However running slmgr /ato on a machine with windows 8 enterprise and I get the error:
"Error: 0xC004F074 The Software Licensing Service reported that the computer could not be activated. No Key Management Service (KMS) could be contacted."
But Office is activated from the exact same server, and Windows 7 is also activated from this server!

The server is running 2008 R2, installed with the new Server KMS key with all updates, including the hotfix Update adds support for Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012 to Windows Server 2008, Windows 7, and Windows Server 2008 R2 KMS hosts

    Any ideas?

Must be something with your Win8 machines, have you tried re-building one of them? Maybe the Windows Firewall is being a pain perhaps, if the 7's are activating fine its not the server that is likely to be at fault.

Reimaged with current image didn't work. Recreated image still didn't work!!!!

Windows firewall off! The server is definitely getting the requests as they show up in the failed count.

Checked the CMID's there not duplicates.

I give in for now! Have installed MAKS for now! Thanks everyone for the help.
