Head > Assesment Manager > ICT Co-Ordinator > NM + Technician
Would prefer it to be structure differently ICT Co-ordinator for curriculum side is great but it can take some effort to get any infastructure decisions because we have no direct line to SLT as IT meetings were cancelled indefinitely a while ago..
If you are one of the technicians then yes.... Unless they are going to regrade you all and fairly redistrubute the roles of the NM around, with appropriate pay adjustments?
I would assume your contracts currently read along the lines of 'support the network manager' on several points. If there isn't one to assist, it will lead to an imbalance.
When I was first starting out, this was the main discussion point for me moving up to Assistant NM and then NM. It's fairly easy for the powers that be to understand - you can't assist / follow the direction of someone who doesn't exist.. and they can't expect you to assume that level of additional responsibility without adjustment.
Head > Business Manager / Head of ICT (Depends who wants to be our boss at the time) > Senior Tech > ICT Tech
When our NM left he never got replaced
Most school I've worked in was like this:
Head > Business Manager > Network Manager > Senior ICT Technician > ICT Tech > Junior ICT Tech
We have two consulting network managers and two techs, one of which (me) is a university placement student.
Head -> Me (ICT Manager) -> 3 techs
I also line managed 2 LRC and 2 reprographics staff
Head-->Head of ICT-->ICT Admin Manager(Me)--> Assist Network Manager --> Web Development Manager
I also as of recently (this week) Manage MIS (MIS Officer and Exams Officer)
Head Teacher > Asst Head (also head of IT) > Network Manager > IT Technician

Chief Exec -> Head Teacher (x3) -> Director of ICT -> Me (Network Manager) -> Technician (day to day, line manager is DoICT).
Mine is very much like @localzuk...
Strategic Head -> 5 x Heads -> NM (me) -> Techs (and for the moment 3rd party support provision)
I report directly to the Strategic Head but am left to my own devices most of the time to report to individual Heads if I think that it's something that is not part of the big picture. I am also part of the strategic IT steering panel which is mostly made up of the ICT leads from each of my schools.

Indeed, I don't report everything directly to my line manager - much of what I do goes via the business manager, or directly to the Chief Exec or the heads of each school. Its a complex structure, as each school within the group is basically a customer of our services.
We don't have a steering panel though, as it was a BSF managed contract until recently, so I'm still setting up policy etc...
