It's only a finite possibility that electrons can tunnel to somewhere you don't expect them to be. in addition to thinking of them all being connected, it is more like an electron cannot ever pass through a certain point, but they tunnel through that point and when they do you cannot measure where they are: so there is as much chance that they are on the moon as anywhere else.
The practical upshot is actually in microprocessors - as the track thickness gets thinner (down to a few nanometers) the probability of electron tunnelling increases, causing current leakage.
This is one of the reasons Moores law was predicted to end, so instead of getting faster speeds, manufacturers concentrated on multi-core processors.
my degree level chemistry is a bit rusty nowadays though...
I'm not a huge scientisty person but still enjoy it and Brian Cox is a breath of fresh air - anyone who publicly calls someone a nobber on Twitter for spouting rubbish despite being in the public eye and of that level of intelligence is well worthy of respect.
