Everyone knows that if you are going to operate a business in today’s world you need a domain name. It is advisable to look at the domain name selected as other see it and not just as you think it looks. Failure to do this may result in situations such as the following (legitimate) companies who deal in everyday humdrum products and services but clearly didn’t give their domain names enough consideration
1. A site called ‘Who Represents‘ where you can find the name of the agent that represents a celebrity. Their domain name… wait for it… is
www.whorepresents.com
2. Experts Exchange, a knowledge base where programmers can exchange advice and views at
www.expertsexchange.com
3. Looking for a pen? Look no further than Pen Island at
www.penisland.net
4. Need a therapist? Try Therapist Finder at
www.therapistfinder.com
5. Then of course, there’s the Italian Power Generator company…
www.powergenitalia.com
6. And now, we have the Mole Station Native Nursery, based in New South Wales:
www.molestationnursery.com
7. If you’re looking for computer software, there’s always
www.ipanywhere.com
8. Welcome to the First Cumming Methodist Church. Their website is
www.cummingfirst.com
9. Then, of course, there’s these brainless art designers, and their whacky website:
www.speedofart.com
10. Want to holiday in Lake Tahoe? Try their brochure website at
www.gotahoe.com

You gotta wonder about some people. They could have saved themslves alot of hilarity with simple hyphen or something

Ah, but a hyphen reduces the impact of a web domain - saying 'who represents' is better than 'who hyphen represents'.
The best option would be to simply come up with a decent name for the business... :P

Haha, do you really think they would care? I know I certainly wouldn't.
This is a common list that is reguarly spread around the internet. Some time last year, a list of them was published in the metro newspaper. At least one of those sites I saw has google ads on there. How much money do you think they are getting from the extra hits?
It just gets their site attention at the end of the day. Who cares what methods are used to get it? It's just business practise lol.

Suppose it makes up for the lost revenue from people who are behind filtering proxies that restrict 'whore' and 'penis' in URLs :P

Haha, fair point Craig.
Looking at www.penisland.net though, is it just me or is that site staged? The contact page is a simple mailto link which won't work on a lot of computers. There is little to no info on the site. The most useful bit if info I get is:
Sorry, we've run out of inventory of our latest batch of Pen Island sample pens. It is currently unknown when we will be running another batch or what the pens will look like.
What do you think?

I reckon it was set up as a joke so people could say "Hey - want some free pens mate? Check out PenIsland.com...."

Lol, bet the joke made them a small fortune as well. Now why didn't -I- have that idea? *Sigh*

LOL very good. People tell me that i ought to change mine.
Apparently people keep reading it as if there was an 'i' between the J and the Z in my domain name (JZNet.org.uk). Which as you can imagin is irritating.
Down to unfortunate initials

Haha, my mind is too innocent... I had no idea what you were talking about, so I googled 'JIZ' and google told me I'd spelt it wrong so I selected it's suggestion and was unpleasantly surprised

Well quite. It's not at all pleasent and /that/s why i'm considering changing it. Even if you just pronounce it without the 'i' in the middle it still sounds a little bit like it should be wrong.
Never register domains in a hurry people!
