11th February 2010, 10:33 PM #2 I think it's to do with the pressure he's applying to the ruler. If it was set up with a load of cogs instead of friction and a rack or teeth instead of a ruler it would work as it is "expected" to. But it's getting on a bit and I'm shattered, so what do I know.

Yup, the big wheel contacts the inner core of the cotton reels, but the outer rim of the reel is in contact with the surface. Bigger circumference means it travels further/faster.
