I've always been disgusted at the excesses of Dubai et al.

All that oil money, and nothing put back into society.
No investments in renumables or trying to reduce carbon footprints.

Just excessive spending on pointless "islands" buildings and general excess!
The amount of money that could have been used to help less fortunate people in their own country, as well as around the world.

When the oil dries up and all the money has gone, they'll be the 1st in line, cap in hand, for help from the world community!

It'll be great for the inhabitants, but from the outside it'll just look a random mess with everyone setting their own direction.

Actually, check the article - the building will generate its own power through wind turbines, enough so that it has spare to sell back to the grid.

I can't remember the source, but I read a little while back that the Saudis are investing a huge amount in renewables. I'll see if I can dig it out - I think I saw it on Digg.

They are also investing massive amounts in building new cities and privatising industries to help increase private sector income.

To be honest, I think they're doing quite well at future proofing their economy and improving the kingdom as a whole.
