lol!
OK. I admit. It was me.

We have just ahd a quote back for 3 servers ... initially it was wrong (we wanted one of them to be a tower with a rack conversion and they just made it a rack server) and the corrected quote has one server as £20 ...
The order goes in in the morning!
lol tony thats cool, i recently ordered 8 latitude 610s with d/ports and stands and they sent the d/ports with european power leads so i phoned em up (got india, the joys of being in business land now) and the guy aplogised profusely and said the power leads would be with me i na few days. I come in next day, i got 8 d/docks waiting for me! I then called them back up and they apologised profusely (starting to see a pattern here?) and said they would send me out the right leads. A few days later i get a bunch of fancy air/sea/car/pluginanywhere laptop adaptors so i cant moan...
They still havent picked up the docks tho...

Its no Joke,
Same thing happened here.
I've be sub-contracted by our school to set up a local skills centre, They already got quotes for all the equipment before I became involved.
The council have given them a stupid amount of money to spend, but only need 16 PC's (must be spent by Aptil etc, so they can get even more money).
They also asked dell for something to share files and use as a print server. Guess what - Dell quote them for a Dual processor 2.2GHz 1GB RAM, U360 dual SCSI £2000.
This isn't quite the same thing as the article in the register. The quoted server could run SBS which isn't over kill for 16 stations. There is also scope for expansion and in a skills centre it wouldn't be quite as messy as p2p filesharing.

They have the money so they are going with the quote.
It will be running Centos, no way SBS if I've got to manage it !
Still can't see why it needs a gig of ram and 2 xeon processors ?, but like you say, they will have room to expand.

1GB of RAM for when one stupid idiot decides to print a 150MB file full of full quality bitmaps (around 6 MB a pice) and expects it to appear within 30 seconds.

Yeah?
Well too bloody right it's broke!

good job print jobs spool from disk1GB of RAM for when one stupid idiot decides to print a 150MB file full of full quality bitmaps (around 6 MB a pice) and expects it to appear within 30 seconds.Could probably get the entire OS in that RAM and not bother buying any HDD lol

LMAO @ THE NEWBIE PC MAN

HEHEHEHE, typical big firm, they would sell a sledge hammer to put a picture hook in the wall, where as a small firm would sell the pin hammer for that job.
