A BBC team faces a fine of nearly £6,000 for “disturbing” polar bears while filming them.

Springwatch host Gordon Buchanan spent 40 minutes shooting footage inside a plexiglass box while a 7ft bear tried to claw its way in.

The Svalbard authorities, which oversee the Norwegian archipelago where the crew were working, has written to co-producer Jason Roberts, warning him he is to be fined 50,000 krone.

Environmental laws protect the animals.

The filming was for a BBC co-production with the Discovery channel The Polar Bear Family & Me, screened in January. Mr Roberts has 14 days to respond.
