hi everyone long time since last post hope everyone is well...
Well here goes on my problem! We had a power cut on friday afternoon after I had left so I went in on saturday to boot everything up. Everything worked sent an email to the outside world checked the website (hosted internally) all worked on my work PC and Ipad on 3g.
BUT... we do not have any internet connection on any of the PC's logged in as staff, students, admin NOTHING??? "page cannot be displayed"
I have rebooted our proxy server again and all switches... Any ideas?
(running 2 DC's server 2003, proxy server, 2 file servers, sim server ect)
Thanks from an IT manager due into work at 0500 tomorrow to fix the issue!
Checked the firewall(s) to make sure they aren't blocking anything?
Are the proxy details correct?
Has your router been configured properly since the power outage?
Can you do a traceroute to say BBC - Homepage
If the traceroute stops anywhere along the lines, that is where the fault will most likely lie
If your website is hosted internally, can you get to it internally? This might help what is and isn't able to be routed?
Start with the servers and work your way outwards.
Do your servers have internet connectivity? Do they go through the proxy?
Try a PC logged on locally with the proxy settings configured and see if you get through (to eliminate any GPO problems).
I can get to the webiste externally and our exchange server externally but no internet on the PC's... Everyone can send emails internally and externally and log into moodle from home ect but within the school there is no internet!!!
I will try ping bbc, google in the morning just putting a plan of action together at the moment!
We have had this at our site, if your DC's and other servers came online after the network devices (switches, pc's etc) it could be that they can't contact the DNS servers, reboot the switch infrastructure followed by a couple of pc's to test. It worked for us over the summer during building works
Dont ping them, do a trace route...ping will just send packets there and back and tell you if it gets interupted, traceroute will show you where it is being interupted.
Can you access the internet from your proxy server? ie direct to the outside!! If you can then your proxy software might have a problem if you cant then its probably not the proxy hardware or anything schoolside ..if you see what I mean .. just a thought for a sunday evening !!
diagnose the basics, Can you ping from workstations? can you resolve dns names? can you ping external ip address? Have you checked any logs on the proxy server?, Which services can get in and out?,can you address websites using their ip address?, where does a tracert to an external website stop?, Can you ping the proxy server?, Are all the services running on the proxy server?,is dhcp working?, is dns working?
sounds like proxy server to me. what proxy server is it?
is it isa? did it boot up before the DC's?
This, but you should also talk to your local broadband consortium. It might be last time they changed something on your router the changes weren't saved, so they disappeared when the kit was rebooted.

start at the top and work down.
Plug a laptop into the router and check a direct connection. Next internet on the proxy server itself. If you can bypass the proxy as administrator try that.
Check your DNS, is your client settings for DNS correct? Try pinging external IP addresses to check.
Thanks for all the help we are now back up and running... proxy server was at fault services were not starting on reboot!
Quick and simple to fix when i knew what the problem was!!!!
