    Lightspeed Sysyems

Currently we are using Bloxx here as our internet filtering solution, but are thinking about moving to Lightspeed. Just had a webinar and demonstration with them, looks impressive...the web zone features look useful and I like the idea of 'The Big Campus'. Anyone here using Lightspeed? Wouldn't mind hearing some experiences of it.

MyBigCampus is what put us off the whole thing - it stinks of Facebook and we all came away from a presentation thinking "They will last 5 minutes before Facebook see it and rip them to shreds". Lack of creativity or originality for that side of it.
The filtering system however seemed pretty much the same as everything else. The provider that was punting this however lied to our faces about their own provisioning so instantly put a huge black tick over anything they suggested. So naturally have a play about first

I know @Mr_Wu has got a lightspeed device.

But I can highly recommend Smoothwall devices as well. They will also do a software only version if required which you can install on A. Your own hardward and B. a VM if needs be.

    Support is also top notch

Reading up on Lightspeed Systems before it looked like you had to get a truckload of servers to run the thing (it was a software suite only back then), and it did look like a ball ache to admin.

I have got a Lightspeed Appliance to go live in Summer, Network Management Hardware, Web Filter Appliance, Spam Filter Appliance

Looks a lot simpler to install (in Line) and reporting is very granular...so looking good so far (mind you we have a Sonicwall E5500 for Content Filtering..which isnt the best)

My Big Campus..well it's a little too American for my liking, but it comes with free cloud storage for students and a iPhone/iPad/Android app to use My Big Campus to upload and download files(bit unstable though) . We have a Frog VLE and as yet no proper integration with Smartphone, Tablets until Frog 4OS comes out...

The appliance is quite new so bit of a leap of faith really. But thier Tech support people have been really good and helpful.

Price wise I got a 3 year deal from Lightspeed Europe direct for 500 users (wired) , unlimited BYOD, My Big Campus, The Rocket Appliance, Days install and training for under £5500 for the 3 year term.

We have had the system 'Rocket' installed for nearly a year now. I must admit it is not that intensive for a single site academy, the spam filter works really well and so does the message journaling. We have never installed the My Big Campus as we didn't think it fitted our Academy. It was a vast improvement on our county filtering system. The are a few other nice features, such as the safe video ( a method of allowing students to access to youtube videos safely) and the zones (these allow teachers to setup whitelists to access for a planned lesson).

We had lightspeed configured for our school by county last week and I think it is very good, once you got it setup how you want and made any exceptions then you are away.

The one thing I do like about the rocket version (which is what we have) is that it can tell you what searches are being performed on your network - we had web sense before and could never tell what a student was looking for when investigating their internet usage.

Out of interest dobsonl , what are your views on the system now that it has been running with a proper load ?

we have had a few issues with the way the LEA have got it setup, but that has been affecting the county, sadly we seem to of been the worest affected - although we were given the option to switch back to our previous filtering system (we still have it running here in school with nobody using it) we decided not to as the reporting and functionality in lightspeed is for quicker and easier.
