BT - Outage of a different sort... Kiwi Thumbs UP :)
Well I got in to the office at 8ish this morning, don't actualy start till 8:30 but had a quick glance at my email...
kiwi syslog had captured an error from our ISDN voice gateway, Interesting me thinks... It's saying the E1 controler has changed to the down state.
Sure enough no in/outbound calls were possible and that's not good. Tried downign and upping the ISDN controler on the router but made no difference. Rebooted the router. No difference.
I was about to ring BT, when I remembered we are with one of those 3RD party call providers. (OH GREAT!) ... 8:20 am found the number for their support line only to find out that
"Our office hours are 9:00 to 5:30" (reminds me of when SIMS support did not open till 9:30).. I routed ourbound calls via the other sites ISDN2 but that's only 4 lines and does not take inbound calls on our number.
Shortly after getting hold of technical support (who raised it to BT )the line came back up, (I had also just restarted the BT NTE & router and replace teh CAT 5 cable to the NTE too).
Now I am considering a SIP trunk even more than previously, in fact have one at each of the two sites with their own internet.
And Need to buy a spare ISDN-E1 card in case that in future proves to be the problem, which was a worry at the time.
Glad we had KIWI running as it gave us the heads up way before the first reports came in from staff..
We suspect a fault in the exchange or at BT, probably due to the amount of rain in the last 24Hrs. Or they turned the kettle on and it blew the power to the rack
SIP trunks are pretty good IMHO - I moved my last place over to them - We had a 100mb leased line into the school and never had a problem with SIP. We then got a single Analogue line run into the office incase of power failure otherwise we would have had to UPS for 45 mins Phone server, Firewall, Routers, Switches, phones etc etc which got expensive and easier just to have a failover line in the office.
At my new work we use lines from Natterbox which is a hosted PBX.
