Boarding Schools - Internet Access for Students (and boarding staff)
Now that access to the Internet is required for such a lot of young people's education, entertainment and communication needs we are under pressure to allow ever more content through our filtering to end users own computers and devices.. a consequence of this is that the whole Internet experience suffers for everyone due to the load on our connection to the outside world.
How do other schools cope with these demands?
Do you have WiFi hotspots for staff and students and how do you make sure those users don't eat all of the available bandwidth?
I know some boarding schools have a policy of providing computers for students - and those are the only devices allowed to access the Internet.. it that commonplace?
It would be nice to compare notes with other schools..

Do you have a proxy server?
You could set it so high bandwidth sites are only allowed out of school hours so it,doesn't impact during the day.

I visited a school in a similar situation. They used the proxy to block things like facebook, twitter, etc which students didn't need during the day. But allowed from say 6PM.
