    Kindle thru Smoothwall ?

    Hi,

I've got smoothwall running as a transparent proxy on our 'public' WIFI.
Just been asked to connect a kindle, but getting a 'Forbidden' HTTP response.
    E.G. 09:32:21 192.168.0.134 192.168.0.134 http://kindle-time.amazon.com/ 403

    Any suggestions ?

What method of authentication are you using on port 80?

Sorry, should have said to start with.
we're using ident by location for the public wifi, mapping onto our default student group.

Have tried putting the site into our whitelist, but made no difference ...

Does the location apply to an IP range? If so, ensure the kindle is pulling one of those IPs.

Yes, location -- Public WIFI 192.168.0.0/16
And the wifi MAC address matches up in DHCP to the address I see in the logs 192.168.0.134

perhaps set up an exclusion for .134 on that range and setup new location - I'd try it with no auth first of all.

Hmm, still no joy - with a transparent policy for this single address and 'no authentication'.

Have now returned the device, but still interested in any other options to try later.

    Any progress on this..?

Slightly different scenario, it's with a staff computer (on domain, using NTLM Authentication / Non-Transparent Proxy) with the Kindle PC software installed, but it is failing to synch/connect.
To be fair I haven't checked the logs yet to see why - just thought I'll ask beforehand incase it is a general option to enable/disable etc

    Thanks.

IT might be the Kindle app can't handle NTLM Authentication. YOu might have to add amazon into the Authentication exceptions cat.
