Allowing Google Apps email, but blocking Gmail

This is worse than I thought- to get gmail working it also allows google+ to work as well. Great! I may as well just unblock facebook now!

Do you have the social networking category blocked? Google+ is covered by this. Allowing mail.google.com shouldn't allow plus.google.com at the same time.

Yes we have that blocked but there is where the problem arises. We have HTTPS blocked, and therefore gmail etc does not work unless google.com is whitelisted. The order of the rules then means that the whitelist for google.com overrules the block for plug.google.com!

Disabling the https rules works, but thats handy for stopping students using sites they shouldn't!
