With Smoothie you are looking at something that doesn't sit atop a windows server, so it'd be either a hardware appliance, or a.n.other server converted into a dedicated smoothwall box.
How's the VM support, our MOE funding is coming to an end mid 2013 Websense (previously Surf Control) School Agreement FAQs 2010-2013 / Frequently asked questions / Home - TKI - The ICT Helpdesk so we/the MoE may be up for some renewals. The current Websence stuff is quite good but really heavy and the later the version the more complex it gets with components that must exist on separate servers.

If we / others can bang it in a VM that can be clustered for redundancy that would be great. I have not dealt with Bloxx but from the reports on here Smothwall is a far more responsive and targeted system for schools so I'd be leaning heavily towards giving a SW box a good testing as an alternative to our current WebSence setups.
