FTP stopped by proxy or filtering in Birmingham (BGFL) ?

    I can't use ftp in B'ham schools.
I can ftp my target site successfully using Filezilla for example, from Sandwell or from home.
So I know my credentials etc are all correct and the ftp site is OK.

It just times out on a school machine.

I went to whatsmyip.com and it lists 80.x.x.x, proxy 1.1 and Webwasher.

As I understand it, BGFL allows http connections across port 80, and FTP across port 21.

I can actually connect to ftp://ftp.dlink.com (a driver site) within the browser through BGFL and I can also connect this way to ftp.bgfl.eu with no problem.

In IE options I see I can use eduproxy.bgfl.org for "all protocols" but am careful to change the port from 80 to 21. Or I can try with no proxy. Neither helps.

    Ideas?

Generally you can FTP to anonymous FTP sites through a browser using a regular http proxy like squid. To use filezilla, the right ports need to be open, or you need a "real" ftp proxy in place.

At which point does it time out? Connect or download? If the latter, try passive ftp.

Yes I've tried passive mode and anonymous access but no luck.
I have to add that we used to ftp to a 10.x.x.x IP address within the council firewall, with no problems. Instant connection.

It is external ftp sites that do not work.

FZ does not connect, just waits and times out.

Don't know if this will help:

Using FTP - Using FTP Friday, 15 May 2009 16:56 Tristan Hoa... | BGfLnet | Ftp, Proxy, Settings, Host, Click

Using these settings allowed me to connect to ftp.dlink.com, without these settings it just sits at "waiting for welcome message...."

Hey thanks, it proceeded - username okay.

However it rejects the password every time.

I have a number of ftp users to try and all rejected.

I could try anon but ultimately I need password protection.

The other problem I have is that the FTP software I am using does not have options for proxy settings, so I guess it aint gonna work over eduproxy.. >:O(

Have you tried opening a command prompt and typing:

    ftp ftprelay.bgfl.org?

I'm not 100% sure but I think you need to be on the BGFL network, you may need a vpn connection?

Sorry, I assumed bgfl.org would be correct from the earlier post.

I only know this because on our site we have to use command prompt, and our is

    ftp ftprelay.salford.gov.uk

Not sure exactly what yours would be.
