    VPN Software?

    Hi,

At home i have a machine running Server 2008 R2 and i use a Mac for my laptop. I was wondering if anyone knows of any good VPN software i can use. The idea is to remote into home when i am using my Laptop on public WIFI to help keep my browsing private. I would like it to run on Server 2008.

    Many Thanks

PS: Something free would be nice.

    I use OpenVPN.

    OpenVPN - Open Source VPN

Not only does it give me security, Its very useful to be able to have a UK IP at a click of a button

I have tried that in the past in server 2003 but i couldnt get it to send traffic down the VPN tunnel. It would send it down the local connection. Is it possible to do this please>

I use openvpn active server( made by the same people as openvpn). Its much easier to setup that openvpn as it has a user interface and can be downloaded pre built as a virtual machine and is free for 2 concurrent users.

If you just go with the very very basic settings then yes its easy but if you want radius authentication, DNS forwarding, or App pass through, you cant beet ticking a box in a GUI which is why I like Active Server.

Another good point about active server is you can download a personalized pre built connection file for your users. Just send your users to the secure website and they login and download what's needed for the connection. None of this config file on users computer must be the same as on the server that you get in the basic openvpn as with AS it's created dynamically on the fly.

LogMeIn Inc. bought Applied Networking Inc. in 2006 (the company who originally created Hamachi) and renamed their VPN software to LogMeIn Hamachi.

Viscosity is a great OpenVPN client for the Mac. Was it this? There's also a Mac version of Hamachi too.

I use Slink for accessing my home Mac remotely and as a proxy for Firefox. Unfortunately it's Mac only at the moment but it is incredibly easy to setup. Another similar app is ShareTool (also Mac only).

Very true. Now you mention it, I did spend hours messing with IP tables to be able to get passed through to the entire LAN at the other end. And also for the default gatway to be changed to force all traffic through the VPN.
