After a recent incident with children using google, can anyone please recommend any good search engines that would be suitable for UK Primary Schools?

Not got any - but once a school has had an incident (which means something that causes a loud parent to demand action) my schools ask me to ban google images using our CLEO supplied webfilter (but not google itself) and I enable strict search filtering on each browser (though haven't got it locked down so someone could change it but I put that into the same category as going into teachers drawer and getting the sharp scissors out when they shouldn't)

Also one of my schools is trialling Hector the Protector as a method of just getting the pupils to censor themselves.

    regards

Thanks for the info. We are in contact with the county about it, as the port was 8081 and the most restrictive.

The school does not have much money or resources to throw at this, being a small primary school. Also being CC3 may not help if they were to run 3rd party software. Hopefully changing the search engine to one that is designed for primary schools (if one exists) will help.

Ask Kids , Yahoo! Kids, KidsClick! Web Search are all OK

We use Google with Strict Safesearch set in the mandatory profile, so its on Strict everytime they login - what with that and RM SafetyNet Plus's web filter we rarely get problems (may be once a year and even then it's been minor)

We did use Easysearch for a while, but its Strict safesearch wasn't and SafetyNet didn't seem to be able to work with it either.

Our schools also like Kids Games, Kids Movies, Kids Music, and More - Yahoo! Kids as comparitivly it is really safe for them to use.

We looked at several recently, but didn't really like that many of them for various reasons. Ask Kids was probably the least bad, though.

If it is images you're worried about, try Picsearch - Image Search for pictures and images - really good for pictures, but the page search leaves something to be desired (search for "girls" returns page3 and FHM as the first results!)

Various links to child-friendly search engines, if you want them - many are naff though!

Thats the trouble with the "kiddy" ones - they aren't much use for image gathering which is why we try to persevere with Google is possible.

( the others are like the sort of scissors that are safe but don't actually cut anything thicker than tissue paper )

    regards

Picsearch is brilliant for images the problem is it also has a page search section, and this is less good.

I've had more problems with Picture searches in PicSearch recently than with Google Images/Safe search=Strict

RM safetyNet Plus doesn't seem to operate as well with PicSearch as it does with Google

What are you using as your firewall? If you are using Microsoft ISA, I can send you a plugin filter that I wrote to enforce strict safesearch for google and bing.
