    DansGuardian

    Hi All,

I am looking into DansGuardian and I wanted to know if it can block polices at certain times? We are a boarding school and I need to be able to block all web access at midnight, can this be achieved?

    Thanks

    Skeep

In the lists folder there is, or should be, a list for controlling access of internet times. It should be in /etc/dansguardian/lists i think.

Not tried this on my DG but looks promising:

I forgot to mention it because I don't use it, but dansguardian (configurable through the GUI) also offers time-based control:
Look at the file banned sites list for example (/etc/dansguardian/lists/bannedsitelist):

    # Time limiting syntax:
    # #time: <start hour> <start minute> <end hour> <end minute> <days>
    # Example:
    ##time: 9 0 17 0 01234
    # Remove the first # from the line above to enable this list only from
    # 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday.

Other than that, user specific net filtering is currently only possible by configuring Dansguardian.
cf Main Index | DansGuardian Documentation Wiki for more info.

Yes theres a module for Webmin.

Will it make it easier? Well sort of. Querying logs is certainly good, but i tent to SFTP and SSH in for everything else as i prefer to see whats going on. Plus i like to have all my filter lists/etc seperate from the main workings of DG just incase an upgrade borks them.

Yes - DG can do this OK.

If you want a web interface to DG.. I believe webmin does a half baked job, and, whilst I am biased, you might want to look at the commercially supported, dg derived product that is SmoothWall Guardian.

Hello wondered if you solved this?

Seems when I try to write to a new file, i dont have privileges to do so.

    Thanks

    Hi

I dont know about danguardian but as far as I know you can stop the squid proxy working by time rules.

    Have a look at

    Restricting Web Access By Time

You can create access control lists with time parameters. For example, you can allow only business hour access from the home network, while always restricting access to host 192.168.1.23.

    #
    # Add this to the bottom of the ACL section of squid.conf
    #
    acl home_network src 192.168.1.0/24
    acl business_hours time M T W H F 9:00-17:00
    acl RestrictedHost src 192.168.1.23

    #
    # Add this at the top of the http_access section of squid.conf
    #
    http_access deny RestrictedHost
    http_access allow home_network business_hours

Or, you can allow morning access only:

    #
    # Add this to the bottom of the ACL section of squid.conf
    #
    acl mornings time 08:00-12:00

    #
    # Add this at the top of the http_access section of squid.conf
    #
    http_access allow mornings

Geof is the expert on this if you need help.

    Richard
