    Unhappy Untangle Issues

    Hope you guys can help!

In a school in hampshire we have the need for a extra filtering system, we already have SWAN which prefilters the net before it even gets to the school.

The schools has a VLAN switch which connects on a specific range so the server and pcs on the network can access the internet.

In internet explorer the proxy settings need to be set to cache.hants.gov.uk port 3129 to be able to access the net.

Thing is the county dont block websites quick enough and there are someother features of Untangle which seem appealing.

Thing is i cant seem to work out how to set this up

Client --> Untangle (dedibox) --> VLAN proxy --> internet

    any ideas? suggestions?

    Thanks

    Grant

So, you have untangle using cache.hants.gov.uk as an upstream proxy?
Then your clients *should* be able to proxy through untangle - tho I am semi-reliably informed that untangle only does transparent proxy, which might make it a bit crap for you...

You really should be using a BECTA accredited filtering solution. <cough>Smoothwall</cough>

I tried to set a port forward so that untangle shifted all webtraffic from its self to the existing proxy but no cigar

Thanks for the suggestion Ben, I think smoothwall is going to be my next option, do you know if smoothwall supports filtering a already filtered connection, i.e setting a proxy on the proxy server lol

Yes, you can upstream your local Smoothwall through another proxy. You will find a couple of people here on EduGeek who (are forced to) use this arrangement :-)

It's just upstream proxies so not a problem.

We are dual filtered, local level by a network guardian server and upstream at lea/bt server farm.

Express doesn't support a filter as standard, though you may be able to bodge one on with one of the many dg mods available.
