Cannot remove a proxy setting from IE8

Got a machine here which the following proxy setting that cannot be removed.

    localhost 2323

I have tried to remove it via the registry and by restoring IE to its defaults but everytime I restart the machine it reloads it.

What's running on port 2323? Also what software is the machine auto starting, especially anything which other machines are not autostarting?

Have you scanned for spyware or checked any scripts running at logon?

The machine is a stand alone pc running xp pro and has no real software installed upon it apart form office, itunes and nero. From what I can see there is nothing running on that port.

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microso* ft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet* Settings

    "ProxyServer"=
    "ProxyEnable"=
    "ProxyOverride"=

I have also been through the local security policy and there is nothing there that shouldn't be.

I would have a look under these for bad entries:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Run
