    Slow Internet Access On Smoothwall

    Hi All!,

Having a problem since we moved to a UTM-1000 smoothwall hardware solution,

The internet via the smoothwall is VERY slow, pain-staikingly slow, now our head has noticed aswell!...

I know its not the internet itself, cuz we've got an ISA Server which when i go through that proxy its absoluetly fine! quite quick...well would be as everyone else is on the net really slow!...lol

    Any ideas?

I would suggest having a chat with support - what's the load average on the box? How many users are accessing the internet through the Smoothie? What's your internet connection speed (I ask this because it can help determine how much "work" the UTM has to do), and do you have AV turned on?

    Hi Tom,

    Thanks for replying,

Average load is hardly anything really, (sorry im not able to access at the min), the amount of users accessing the smoothie at the min are...<7...as its end of term now!...

Our internet speed is 4MB leased line, and the AV is turned on, as it was before, and before it was running on a less spec box, it was running on a P4 2.8ghz, 2gb ram...80gb hard drive, so the UTM-1000 is alot more spec'ed up!

That definitely sounds suspicious mart - would give support a ring - 0800 5 999 041, and bend their ears for a little bit.

Edit: Let me know how you get on, the number below is my direct line, if you need it!

Just an update on this guys!..

Seems to be working fine now, although very very quick testing - everything seems alot faster!..

    What i did,

    1) Deleted external connection and re-created it.
    2) Deleted all entries from the database and recreated a blank database.

I think something must of gone wrong when i put uploaded the database from the old smoothwall to the new one, but hey seems to be working...well till ppl tell me otherwise lol

Thanks for all your help as ever Tom!

There have been a few cases where the database gets itself mixed up - unfortunately we have had to make a stream of minor changes to it recently, some performance tweaks, and some to allow inclusion of other data (eg search terms). That might have been what was causing it, but it would have shown up in the load average, I would have thought.

More likely a subtle DNS problem fixed by recreating your external connection?

Anyway - glad it is working, keep an eye on it over summer and let me know if it gets silly again.
