we have recently purchased a "Network Guardian" smoothwall.
It works very well. Recently we have noticed that the load average
get very high. My boss has told me its something to do with the size
of the logs files.
Are there any routine/schedule task that can be run to ..
1. backup usefull information to do with web filtering
2. improve the load average
Yes - you can backup the database (from the database backup page ) and prune the logs down to a smaller size. Do make sure you have applied the latest updates though, as there are some changes in there which improve load average.

Worth noting though that a high load average on its own isnt necessarily a problem (it could be non-vital processes with high wait states)
